The CBAA has received funding from the Australia Council for the Arts in their recent grant round, and is excited to partner with First Nations Media Australia on a new initiative to raise the profile of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists – helping to share their songs and stories.
First Nations Media Australia will feature selected music on its national content platform, indigiTube, which showcases music and video content for listeners to stream and download within the app - and for broadcasters to replay on air. Read more. |

Strengthening Sector Support

| This week, CBAA’s CEO Jon Bisset and Project Coordinator (Government Relations) Holly Friedlander Liddicoat, have been in Canberra meeting with politicians to further strengthen support for the sector. Discussions have been had regarding improving funding, regulation and legislation with the offices of Senator Steele-John, Senator Lambie, Senator David Van, Senator Stirling Griff, Michelle Rowland MP, Rebekha Sharkie MP, Senator Rex Patrick, Tim Watts MP, Minister Mark Coulton, Andrew Wilkie MP, Josh Wilson MP and Senator Hanson Young. The sector continues to receive positive support across the political spectrum.The CBAA is currently developing a Forward Agenda to guide policy efforts over the next few years, and look forward to continuing shaping this with the sector over the coming months. |

Community Broadcasting Suicide Prevention Project

The September 2019 content of our national suicide prevention and mental health awareness project, developed with the support of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, is now online.
This month we learn about the National Communications Charter, which has been designed to guide the way organisations talk about mental health and suicide prevention, and we profile TUF Minds - Life Rescue, an innovative mental well-being and suicide prevention program. We hear about INSIST, a new suicide prevention training for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities, and we catch up with the team at R U OK?

Last week was a big week at BIGSOUND in Brisbane for community broadcasting!
Community radio was everywhere during the Australian music industry’s biggest week on the calendar. Once again, CBAA's Amrap held its annual listening sessions, with community radio music directors from 3RRR, 3PBS, 2SER, SYN, 4ZZZ and Edge Radio taking in the sounds of around 30 up and coming Australian artists and offering invaluable feedback and advice.
Amrap Manager, Andrew Khedoori, also took part in BIGSOUND’s radio hook-ups, with several mini-sessions charting the various pathways of the community radio landscape for artists keen to get their career kick-started. Read more. |

The rise of Genesis Owusu in recent years has been incredible to watch and 2019 looks to be his biggest year yet! The Canberra artist's latest offering, Good Times matches sharp rhymes with falsetto back-ups to establish a feel good groove. Good Times has landed the number five position in the Metro Chart with Melbourne based duo, Hemm right behind at number six with their latest, Think About It.
Leading the way on the Regional Chart, Harvey Russell's track Rollin' Into Town has debuted at number one this week with Tamworth’s own, Allison Forbes not far behind at number eight with her single Hell Freezes Over from her forthcoming debut album Bonedigger.

What is your connection to Community Broadcasting?
My entry point to community radio was presenter training on FBi Radio in Sydney and hosting the Allnighter shift. Nine years on, I have presented and produced numerous specialist programs on the station, including the drive program Monday Arvos and late-night DIY music shows Radiant and Makeshift. I’ve been Content and Station Manager Sydney station, 2RRR, and worked in multiple roles across various CBAA initiatives over the years. These experiences lead me to my current role as Program Coordinator within the Digital Radio Project, supporting the roll-out and ongoing operation of community radio services on DAB+.
What’s on your playlist?
I enjoy listening to DIY obscurities from the past and present in equal measure. Some current-day punk and punk adjacent favourites include Warm Bodies, Special Interest, Swab, Grass Widow and Parsnip. I’m currently obsessed with Solange and an 80s power pop band called Game Theory.
What is your passion away from the CBAA?
For a long time, making radio was my biggest passion! I’m taking a small break from volunteering at the moment to pursue some other interests. I love playing music, reading as much as I can, and walking in the bush. I spend a lot of time trying to win favour with my cat, Wanda.
You will soon be participating in the McKinsey Youth Leadership Forum on a scholarship. What are you hoping to gain from this program?
I’m looking forward to receiving valuable feedback and insight into my capacity and effectiveness as a leader, and the opportunity to meet some great people from diverse organisations and industries. I hope to learn new skills and knowledge to feed back into the sector through my role at the CBAA. |
