Community radio has been a vital source of local emergency information and space for community connection throughout the recent bushfire crisis, with Shadow Minister Michelle Rowland recognising the sector's contribution in Parliament House last week.
The CBAA has reached out to almost 80 community radio stations in bushfire affected regions, collecting stories and hearing how the fires have affected stations and volunteers, including Alpine Radio in Mount Beauty Victoria whose volunteers worked through the night to broadcast emergency warnings from Forest Fire Management Victoria. UNESCO calls on stations to uphold diversity
World Radio Day(WRD) is tomorrow 13 February, and celebrates radio as a powerful medium for celebrating humanity in all its diversity and constitutes a platform for democratic discourse. This year's WRD is divided into three main sub-themes ...
ADVOCATING for pluralism in radio, including a mix of public, private and community broadcasters; ENCOURAGING representation in the newsroom, with teams comprised of diverse society groups; and PROMOTING a diversity of editorial content and programme types reflecting the variety of the audiences.
The CBAA encourages all community radio stations to plan for something special on WRD. Remember to share your posts, tweets and Instagram photos using the hashtags #WorldRadioDay #WeAreRadio #WeAreDiversity, and tag @CommunityBroadcasting.

Volunteer Grants Activity - 2019-20 Volunteer Grants: now open!
The Volunteer Grants Activity is an element of the Families and Communities Program and aim to support the efforts of Australia’s volunteers as well as to encourage and increase participation in volunteering. The grants provide small amounts of money that organisations and community groups can use to help their volunteers. Applications close 6 April, 11pm AEST.
The February 2020 Community Broadcasting Suicide Prevention Project focuses on the mental health impacts of traumatic events like the bushfire crisis, with segments for young people affected by these recent events, the importance of self-care and how we can tell when we need help and support to deal with what we’re feeling or experiencing. We have expert advice from SANE Australia, Beyone Blue and ReachOut amongst others. Developed with the support of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.

Yorta Yorta artist and producer Neil Morris - aka DRMNGNOW - has been growing from strength to strength with a string of releases exploring Indigenous rights, culture and colonialism. His latest single, Survive, is sitting at number six on the Metro Chart for the second week in a row. Kelly Brouhaha has topped the Regional Chart this week with Benjamin, an alt-country tune with a raw vulnerability we’ve come to expect from Brouhaha’s songwriting.
