Yesterday, in front of more than 20,000 people in my hometown of Oakland, we officially kicked off this campaign for president.
It was just a couple blocks from yesterday’s rally that, nearly 30 years ago, as a young district attorney, I walked into the courtroom for the very first time and said five words that would guide my life’s work:
“Kamala Harris, for The People.”
For The People isn’t just our campaign slogan: it’s the heart and soul of our movement, the very reason I wake up every morning ready to fight so hard to win this race. I promise to stand up and fight for YOU.

We’ve taken on many battles together. We’ve won and we’ve lost. But we’ve never stopped fighting -- there’s too much on the line. We are at an inflection point in the history of our nation. The American Dream and our American democracy are under attack like never before.
We are called to answer a fundamental question: who are we as Americans? It’s up to us to answer that question -- to the world, and to each other. We know we are better than this.
We’re going to need to fight to make it true. Together, we will fight to guarantee that working and middle-class families get a hand up with the largest working and middle-class tax cut in decades. Together, we will fight to declare education a fundamental right, and to guarantee that right with universal pre-k and debt-free college.
We will fight to ensure health care a fundamental human right, and ensure that right with Medicare for All. We will fight to protect our democracy and our institutions against all enemies, foreign and domestic. We will fight for an America where every single parent can send their children to school without fear of a mass killing spree. We will fight for an America where we treat attacks on voting rights, civil rights, women’s rights, and immigrant rights as attacks on our country itself.
Together, we will stand up and fight for every single person who has ever felt vulnerable or voiceless -- because it is our duty to one another as Americans to protect one another and lift each other up.
I’ll be blunt: we will only win this race if we’re powered by a true grassroots movement. That means we need to reach every single fundraising goal we set. Right now, we’re up against the first end-of-month goal of our campaign for president: raising $500,000 online before midnight on January 31.
