KDTN Radio One Country
APACHE JUNCTION AZ (IFS) -- This little radio station has been broadcasting along since 1977 as a cassette tape radio subscription service with the name of KDRC Cassette Radio. Started by Kenneth Howard Smith in Hollywood California. The letters were noted as KENNY'S D-TOWN RADIO CASSETTE for your automobile.
With the early days of internet radio, and Rocky Mountain Internet provided the first full-time access, one of their clients was Broadcasting.com, and if you had a soundcard and a microphone, you too could have started your very own radio station for free in 1994. The format was WAV and you were limited to thirty (30) minutes per day, the minimum was 8kHz to 32kHz.
So we fast forward some thirty plus years and the stations name was changed to KDTN Radio One (aka - Kenny's D-Town), and has established a hot country following. Monthly licenses are well over $200 per month per station, and the inclusion of daily news services, with international news from REUTERS, World News from Voice Of America (VOA), and local/domestic news from National Public Radio (NPR) to keep our listeners up-to-date.
It was over one year ago that SDC Streaming Services added their Top 40 Weekly Sampler on Country Music in the Interview line-up. We never charged a fee for anything, and we never had commercials before.
With notices from IBM, Boeing Airlines, Best Western Hotels, and other small operations, KDTN Radio One has become its own monolith in internet radio broadcasting.
Radio media buying and airtime costs on major networks
Typical primetime spots on national US networks can be expected to cost something in the range of $200,000 to $800,000, while on a larger national cable network you are expected to pay $40,000 to $80,000. On smaller US networks costs are between $2,000 to $40,000, and on smaller local stations you can buy some spots for as little as $50 for 60 seconds.
Satellite radio
We have seen something similar to DRM today happening for satellite radio in Europe. Back in the late 1990s, some government stations in Europe were fooled into believing that they could save a huge amount of money by switching off their Shortwave operation, and move them to satellite radio. Unfortunately, whoever owned a satellite receiver at home, they used to watch TV, not to listen to satellite radio. Satellite radio is not popular even today. It is not portable and mainly used only as a distribution media for radio relay stations. The advent of internet streaming – de facto – meant that satellite radio is now obsolete technology.
